The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
