Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest win of his professional journey by coming back from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win represents Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world number one.

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's impressive run of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which marked the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he cruised through the initial stanza. However, Norrie steadily battled back into the match by serving with greater precision and engaging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical rallies. His relentless shot tolerance and consistency slowly left its mark.

During large parts of the contest, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent seemed particularly uneasy hitting his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for most of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his reliability, fitness and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to advance into the court and attack well.

After dealing for a long time due to a major arm issue and difficulties with his game, the tennis professional fell as far down as 91st in the rankings this year.
