Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
