Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Are Teaching Sessions at DMU

Beginning in 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been hosting immersive events where experienced game masters manage Dungeons & Dragons games in historic castles in Britain and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among forever DMs who infrequently find the moment to participate as players themselves, and they often seek advice from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and puzzle design to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the coordinators began crafting a structured way to address these questions, which led to the founding of DMU. The inaugural event is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“There are thousands of YouTube videos on any topic and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction together with peers in game mastering, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and other game masters often in a similar position and seek to improve their skills,” noted Jason Carl.

Workshop Options and Pricing Tiers

DMs can opt for packages ranging from just under $1,000 to $2.5K, depending on the amount of contact they desire with the instructors. The base tier includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Foundational Skills: Covers the essentials of leading a game.
  • Campaign Building: Is dedicated to building persistent adventures.
  • Universe Design: Concentrates on the crafting of environments.
  • Professional Development: Designed for DMs who seek to understand more about the roleplaying business.

All workshops includes two days of training divided across 48 hours.

“The courses are designed so that you depart having immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl explained. “They’re not just lectures and they’re not just static videos. These workshops that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the following week and implement in your local game.”

Professional Teachers

Many sessions are instructed by a pair of experts. Setting design is led by an industry veteran and Keith Baker, together instructing the skill of universe design.

Career building presents four different teachers, such as a puzzle design specialist, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The additional faculty is designed to provide specialized information to students with particular aims.

“Some of them aim to start their own real-play series and share their stories with the world, some of them plan to produce and develop fresh ideas,” Carl stated. “Some just want to ask, What's the path to be a DM at something like a castle event? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Premium Packages

A $1.5K gold tier provides access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the debut of the program, though the company has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between campaigns at their immersive experiences.

“One could practically host an entire weekend just on office hours for career game masters,” Carl mentioned. “I'm not certain if that’s the optimal application of everybody’s time – I believe the formal instruction and the hands-on activities is highly beneficial – but I suspect it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The $2.5K premium option includes an extended personal consultation and the chance to lead a session for several participants plus one of the faculty members, who will then give comments and instruction.

“The goal is for the teacher to assess whichever aspect is interested in: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in this kind of combat situation. May I present a scenario for you and get feedback on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to receive input and information on a particular setting that they’ve been creating.”

Next Steps

Feedback from the first event will help shape subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that likely modifications could include adding more office hours, lengthening the event to three days, or trying out alternative workshop formats.

“I anticipate that we do this frequently,” Carl expressed. “I really want to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a single year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The reception has been extremely positive. We're quite pleased with what we’re seeing and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to conduct this in partnership with major events.”
