Heat & Trail Blazers Secure First Wins Following Recent Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since player Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.

But, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year existence.

Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
